Rule of kings is replaced by two consuls
- elected officials
- term = 1 year
-always aristocrats
-patricians traced their decent from a famous ancestor or Pater
-Duties were justice, making laws, and controlling the army
-One consul could veto the other
Plebs
Fifth century BCE- patrcian dominace of the goverment was challanged by the plebs
-plebs were 98% of the population
How did the patricians dominate
-plebs served in the army
-plebs couldnt hold office
-threatened by debt slavery
-no legal rights
-plebs were victims of disromatory decisions in judicial trails
Rome had no written laws
Patrcians used it to their advantage
laws were written (12 tables)
posted in public in 450 BC
Tribunes were picked
SPQR (Senatus Populusque Romanum)
designates any decree or choice by "The Roman Senate and People"
